Steps you can take to ‘Be Winter Ready’

  • Know your free emergency numbers:  In a power cut dial 105 or, for a gas emergency, dial 0800 111999.

  • Prepare your home:  Keep a torch handy and get your appliances serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Register as a vulnerable customer:  Vulnerable households can get extra support by signing up to the Priority Services Register.  For more details click here.
  • Keep your eyes open:  Keep an eye on the weather forecast, if you have a power cut or a gas emergency, check on your neighbours.

Winter ready checklist

  1. Get your flu jab
  2. Top up anti-freeze screen wash
  3. Check your vehicle’s tyres
  4. Think about a winter kit for your car
  5. Consider alternative commuting plans for severe weather
  6. Heat your home to at least 18 degrees celcius
  7. Consider how you would access vital information
  8. Check your pipes are insulated
  9. Know where your stoptap is
  10. Think about what may be impacted by strong wings
  11. Check if you are at risk of flooding
  12. Freeze a loaf of bread and a pint of milk for times of bad weather
