  • Wherryman’s Way

Logo of Wherrymans WayThe Wherryman’s Way is in the Broads and is Britain’s largest protected wetland. The route takes its name from the wherry – a large cargo-carrying barge whose elegant black sails were a once common sight on these waters.

You can walk the whole route or explore parts of it by cycle, train and river bus. The section covered for Langley with Hardley is walk 6.  Details of the route are below.

See Norfolk County Council website for further details (link to external website)

  • Hardley Cross

This 16th Century monument is erected on the banks of the River Yare near the junction of the River Chet to mark the boundary of jurisdiction between Norwich and Great Yarmouth.  It can be reached by taking the footpath which follows the river bank from Hardley Dyke to Chedgrave.

A marker, of some form or other, has stood on this spot since the 1400s.  The cross was repaired in 1820, 1884 and 1899 when the fence was erected around it.  It received further attention in 1990 and the bank was strengthened as the cross was in danger of falling into the river.  Despite many passed repairs it is generally in good condition.

The moorings beside the River Yare for six boats and the Wherrymans Way ensure the Cross is well visited.

  • Playground Opening Ceremony

The official opening ceremony was carried out on Sunday 20th May 2018.  More than 100 people turned out to mark the official opening of the newly equipped play area.  The event was opened by Mrs Margaret Stone, chairman of Norfolk County Council and Mr John Overton, chairman of South Norfolk Council.  Members of the parish council were thanked for their hard work in obtaining funding and carrying out the project.  The sunshine on the day was an added bonus and the ice-creams were most welcome. People enjoyed themselves.

A “Times Gone By” exhibition ran at the same time and proved to be a success and attracted a large number of visitors.

  • Hardley Windmill

Hardley Windmill is the most active mill on the Norfolk Broads.

Restored and run by volunteers.  The epic restoration started in 1992.  Work on the cap and sails was completed in 2009.  Now the sails turn regularly and after a climb to the top of the mill, visitors can enjoy the stunning view from the balcony running round the mill cap.  Work on the internal machinery is complete.  When conditions are suitable the internal turbine pump can be demonstrated.  The engineering work, grass cutting, maintenance of the visitor centre, guiding visitors up the mill, providing refreshments and organising special events are largely down to the dedicated team of volunteers.
